How I sorted my café's moving paperwork, one form a night
A NoCrast comic story: Raj, a café owner, and the pile of moving paperwork he kept putting off.
The café had a new address. Everything else still had the old one. The bank, the suppliers, the council, the insurance. The forms piled up on a table, and so did the post I hadn't opened.
One night after closing I sat down with all of it. Chairs stacked on the other tables, laptop shut, hand on the back of my neck. I didn't know where to start, so I didn't.
I picked up my phone to check the time. Forty minutes later I was still behind the counter, still scrolling. Just checking the time. The pile hadn't moved.
The next night I reached for my usual apps and NoCrast had them on hold. The shield came up with my next step on it instead of my feed. I'd set that up earlier and forgotten.
So I let NoCrast's AI split the pile into small steps. I typed in what I needed, sort out the move paperwork, and it came back as a list of single forms and single calls. Each one small enough to start.
I gave myself one rule: one form after closing each night. I'd sit at the counter by the lamp and fill it in. The boring ones earned a little more screen time, which felt fair, because those were the ones I'd been avoiding for weeks. Two finished forms in the tray. Then three.
Then one evening the tray was empty. I pulled on my jacket with a stack of sealed, stamped envelopes in my hand. The paperwork had its own corner of the counter now, and that corner was clear.
How to sort out your moving paperwork
1. Get it all in one place. Put every letter, form and note about the move into one tray, box or corner. You don't need to read any of it yet. You just need to see the whole pile so it stops hiding in drawers.
2. Write down who needs your new address. Go through the pile and list each place: bank, insurer, suppliers, utilities, tax office, anyone who sends you post. Each name on that list is one task, not one big job.
3. Turn each task into a step small enough to start. "Update the bank" is still vague. "Find the change-of-address form on the bank's site" is a step you can do. In NoCrast, you can describe the goal in your own words and its AI breaks it into small, doable tasks, each with a time estimate, so you can see what's ready to start.
4. Pick one fixed moment and do one thing. Raj chose after closing, one form a night. Pick a time you already have, like after dinner or before the school run, and do one form. Stopping after one is fine. Whatever you don't finish is still on your list tomorrow.
5. Put the phone out of reach while you work. Checking the time is usually how the evening goes. Keep the phone in another room, or let NoCrast keep your distracting apps on hold until the step is done. Hard or boring tasks earn a little more screen time, so the dull forms come with something at the end.
6. Finish each one fully. Sign it, put it in an envelope, stamp it, and put it by the door. A form that's filled in but never sent still feels like part of the pile. A sealed envelope is done.
Moving paperwork isn't hard. There's just a lot of it, and it's dull. One form at a time, it gets smaller.
