How to actually go to the gym after work: the bag by the door
A NoCrast comic story: Tomás, a student with café shifts, and the gym bag he kept packing and never taking.
I'd packed the gym bag four times. I never once took it. Every evening I'd come home from my shift, still in my café shirt, and sit down on the hallway floor next to it. I'd tell myself the same thing: tomorrow, properly, after my shift.
Then I'd sit down on the sofa for five minutes and lose the whole evening. A takeaway box, my guitar leaning on the armrest, my phone in my hand. The gym bag stayed by the door.
The gym wasn't the only thing slipping. Groceries and laundry kept sliding too. Since the move, my flat felt like a list that only grew.
NoCrast let me set routines once: gym, groceries, laundry. I stood at the kitchen counter and picked the days for each one. That was it.
After that, they showed up in my plan with everything else. The gym wasn't a vague "tomorrow" any more. It was right there in today's list, with its time next to it. So I went. I pulled on my trainers by the front door, bag already on my shoulder, apron on the hook behind me.
Ticking the gym done earned the evening's screen time. I sat on the changing-room bench, a bit out of breath, and my phone felt like something I'd earned, not something that had eaten my night.
The next morning I filled my water bottle at the kitchen window. The bag was packed and open by the door, next to my guitar case. That week I went three times.
How to actually go to the gym after work
1. Decide the days once, not every evening. "When I feel like it" is a new decision every night, and a tired brain after a shift says no. Pick your days now and write them down. In NoCrast you can set the gym as a routine with its days, and it shows up in your plan on those days with everything else.
2. Make the first step tiny. The task isn't "do a full workout". It's "put on trainers" or "walk out the door with the bag". Once you're out, the rest is easier to keep going with.
3. Don't sit down first. For many of us, the sofa and the phone are where the evening goes. If you can, change and leave before you sit down. Keep the bag packed and by the door so there's nothing to decide.
4. Put the phone after the gym, not before. Scrolling "for five minutes" is how evenings disappear, and that's the phone's design, not a flaw in you. Let the scrolling come after the gym. NoCrast keeps your distracting apps on hold until your tasks are done, and finishing a task earns screen time on them, so the evening scroll comes after the gym and without the guilt.
5. Group the boring admin with it. Groceries and laundry pile up the same way. Give them their own days too, so they stop sitting in the back of your mind on gym nights.
6. If you miss a day, just pick up the next one. One skipped evening doesn't undo the plan. The next gym day is still there. Start again from the bag by the door.
