How I finally launched my portfolio site, two small steps a day
A NoCrast comic story: Yara, a marketer, and the portfolio site she kept putting off.
I launch campaigns for everyone. Clients, colleagues, friends of friends. My own portfolio site sat unfinished for a year.
When I moved into my new flat, the site came with me, like the boxes I still hadn't unpacked. One monitor showed other marketers' portfolios. The other showed my layout: a page of empty blocks.
The list only got longer, and I got quieter about it. Late at night, making tea, I'd look at the to-do list curling on the counter next to the lease papers. And I'd think the same thing every time: it has to be perfect first. So it stayed at "coming soon".
Then I tried something different. NoCrast broke the launch into tiny steps I could actually start. Not "build my site". Smaller things, the kind you can finish before your tea goes cold.
Two steps into today. That was the whole plan. I sat on the sofa and swiped through the day's tasks, keeping two and putting the rest off to later, with the koala on the armrest looking at the screen with me.
After that it was one step a day. I picked six campaigns. I built the pages. Sticky notes with ticks started lining up along the edge of my monitor.
And one morning, it was live. A grid of my own work across both screens. After a year of "coming soon", I just leaned back and looked at it.
How to launch your portfolio site when it has to be perfect first
Write the goal down in plain words. "Launch my portfolio site" is enough. Then find the very first step: something you could finish today, like choosing a domain name or listing the projects you might include. In NoCrast, you describe the goal in your own words and its AI breaks it into small, doable tasks, so you always see what is ready to start.
Pick your work before you design anything. Choose a few projects you are glad to show. A short list you finish beats a long list that keeps growing. Yara chose six and stopped there.
Plan only two steps for today. Keep the day small on purpose. If you finish early, good. If you don't, the rest can wait. In NoCrast you swipe right to commit to a task and left to postpone it, and whatever you don't finish comes back tomorrow.
Build one page at a time. One case study: the brief, what you did, a few images. Done means it's on the page, not that it's perfect. You can edit a live page. You can't share an empty one.
Make progress visible. Tick things off where you will see them: sticky notes on your monitor, a paper checklist, a list on your phone. Seeing the ticks pile up makes the next step easier to start.
Pick a launch day and publish. Decide that "good enough to show" is the bar. Put it live, then improve it in small steps, the same way you built it.
If your own site has been "coming soon" for a while, you're not alone. It doesn't need a big weekend. It needs one small step you can start today, then another tomorrow.
